Are you an adolescent? Do you drink coffee? You should think twice. Caffeine can cause greater change in young brain compared to the adult rendering it more susceptible to substance abuse disorder.
A recent study suggested caffeine use during adolescent enhances the brain’s sensitivity to cocaine in adulthood. Adolescent rats treated with caffeine showed increased sensitivity to cocaine as their brain developed altered dopamine signaling in reward circuit involved in addiction. As the developing brain is different from the adult brain, the use of caffeine can lead to increased risk of illicit drug use.
